How do we determine who our audience
is? Personally, I don’t think we choose them. We don’t make music or draw
things for people to see, we make our art because we just want to. The part
that comes next is the audience finding you. A normal audience that everyone
usually has is family. Family is always there for you and will listen to every
song you make or every picture you make. The only thing bad with that is that
no matter what, your family will lie and say they like it. This is true at
least in my situation. Its not like it’s a bad form of lying, they just don’t want
to hurt your feelings or their just so proud that you could actually make
something.
To
tell if your art is really something is by going out and throwing your art out there
and hoping an audience will find it and pick it up. The art you make also decides
who your audience is. If you’re in a metal band, your audience will only go as
far as big, burly metal heads. No one who likes county or artists like Taylor
Swift will be an audience for a metal band. And the same goes for those who
make country music. They do not make music thinking that all country fans will
like them. If they like it, they’ll make it. If it’s something they like, it’s probably
good for that genre and that audience will pick it up.
People
seem to always give mixed reviews when judging art. This goes into way back
last week on how we all view things differently. People view and judge your art
differently, and that is also how an audience builds. Your family will give you
different feedback than a stranger would, for example. A stranger does not care
how personally feel, which is actually a good thing. Your family will tell you its really good, even if its really bad. This is why I do not consider my own family a big influence on me and my music making, because I feel like I do not need to really impress them or prove to them I am a talented artist.
