Back in high school I learned something about teachers. There
are going to be the ones who teach and there are going to be ones that educate.
Although there are similarities, teaching someone is still different than
educating someone. Through teaching there is a sense of authority, there is a
right and a wrong, and it’s very structured. Now educating someone, is giving
them knowledge on one subject. One who educates gives intellectual, moral, and
social instruction, rather than the opinions of themselves. In my opinion it’s okay
to have an opinion, but an educator gives factual information over all. They are
also interactive with their audience to make sure they are connecting with them
on a personal level.
Yesterday’s lecture was a perfect example of teaching. The “teacher”
tried instill the audience with a sense of knowledge without first helping them
to understand where he was coming from. He was supposed to talk about design,
but what he did was teach about his book and how his own mind works. Teachers tend
to force views and opinions on their audience as opposed to giving factual information
on their subject. There wasn’t a point in time where he mentioned that this is
exactly how the mind of a designer works with facts from actual studies. He talked
more about his book, and what he learned from himself rather than the subject
at hand. He also did not try to connect with any one of the people in his audience.
It shows a lack of consideration for the views and opinions of the people he
was presenting himself to.
The one lecture I feel that I learned and was educated on
was the one about business. I am not the type to care for business in any way
shape or form. Through educating us on facts, being interactive with us, like
asking questions and having us participating in the learning process, I feel as
though I walked out of the lecture with the knowledge, and confidence to better
myself. It seemed as though she generally cared about what we had to say
because of all the questions she asked.
